About this tool
Percentages sound simple until you're standing in a store trying to figure out what 30% off actually means in rupees, or staring at a spreadsheet trying to calculate year-over-year growth. This tool handles the common percentage calculations people actually need - what percent one number is of another, percentage increase or decrease, and reverse calculations where you know the percentage but need to find the original number.
Underneath the calculator, we've also written out the formulas being used, mostly because a lot of people don't just want the answer, they want to understand how it was reached (useful if you're a student double-checking homework, or just someone who likes knowing the "why").
A quick example, since the wording can get confusing: if a price goes from ₹500 to ₹650, that's not a 30% increase calculated however you feel like it. It's (650 - 500) / 500 × 100, which comes out to 30%. Small wording mix-ups like "increase of" versus "increase to" trip people up constantly, so the calculator is built to be explicit about which one you're solving for.
